“Did you get hold of your wife last night?” DS Emma Adler squinted as she shielded her eyes from the glare of the low sun streaming through the window.

DS Richard Fitzwilliam shook his head as he got up from his desk. Walking over to the window, he pulled the blind down. “Better?” She smiled and nodded. “She was out according to her mother and had forgotten her phone.”

She tilted her head to one side. “But you’re not so sure?”

Amber doesn’t go anywhere without her phone. And why didn’t she ring when she got back from the cinema?

He sat down again and folded his arms across his chest. “I think she’s still mad at me and making sure I know it.”

In an out-of-character move, Fitzwilliam had told Adler over a quick pub dinner last night about his wife’s overreaction to his taking the role within investigations. Not one who naturally shared his personal issues with work colleagues, he’d been surprised at how easy Emma Adler had been to talk to.

She nodded. “Give her a few days. I’m sure she’ll come around.” She glanced at her watch. “Reed is late.”

“So any idea what this special briefing is all about?” Fitzwilliam asked.

“No idea. But I wonder if it’s something to do with why Gill Sterling was in the car. Maybe they’ve found out something about their relationship?”

Fitzwilliam frowned. “You think she and the earl were having an affair?”

“Don’t you?”

Fitzwilliam shrugged. “I haven’t really thought about it, to be honest.” He grinned at her. “Anyway, what happened to thoughts and feelings being dangerous in investigations? Didn’t you tell me we’re only interested in what we know and can prove?”

She pulled a face. “You’re no fun! And anyway, this is speculation, which is totally okay if you ask me.”

Still grinning, Fitzwilliam raised his mug of coffee to her. “Here’s to a good healthy dose of speculation!”

The door opened, and Detective Chief Inspector Angus Reed strolled in, followed by the lofty DCI Prior, the lanky DS Turner, and a slim man in his mid-forties wearing a navy-blue suit. I wonder who that is? Fitzwilliam raised an eyebrow at Adler as they both rose and stood by their desks.

“We’ll go into my office,” Reed said as he walked across the room. Prior turned and nodded to Fitzwilliam and Adler as he followed Reed. Fitzwilliam suppressed a smile. It looks like Reed is being chased by a giant.

They followed the stranger into the cramped office. Prior and Turner filed in and made their way to the back of the space. Sneaky! They’ve got the windows. Leaving Fitzwilliam and Adler no choice but to fill the area in front of them.

“Fitzwilliam, Adler, this is Detective Chief Inspector Tim Street.” Reed gestured towards the man with the short grey hair as they stopped in front of the desk. “DCI Street is from PaIRS but is currently on secondment to MI6.”

Fitzwilliam caught Adler’s eye. MI6? Well, this has got interesting all of a sudden. Although Fitzwilliam had never met DCI Tim Street before, he’d heard of the man.
